16-18 February 2018Miera iela 36B, Centra rajons, Rīga, LV-1001, Latvia

This will be the second Urban Sketching School in Riga, and the first one in winter - a time very challenging for all who sketch urban environments. UrbanSketchers Riga is organising it together with two artists and urban sketchers - Alex Hillkurtz from France and Melanie Köhler from Germany.

Everyone interested is more than welcome to participate, learn to sketch and support an exchange of drawing practices from the other parts of the world. The only requirements are a There are no any requirements but willingness to draw and enjoy the process.

Our focus this time will be on topics related to urban sketching in winter - how to find objects and subjects that allows comfortable drawing in cold and dark winter. It is not about just finding a spot where watercolours don't freeze and it is much more than fast sketching to stay alive. Alex comes from the film industry and will share tricks used by filmmakers. Melanie is an amazing portrait artist and will share her approach of including people into sketches. Masha loves illustrating food and Alina is an architect who feels the space of interior and exterior, and they both are excellent in explaining drawing.

Alex's workshop is Telling a Story With Pictures: Explore moving beyond merely what you see, and depicting what you want others to see. Play with what to put in, and what to leave out of a sketch. Every picture tells a story, so let’s tell a compelling one!

Melanie's Spontaneous workshop: every step begins with a first stroke. We will focus on doing a lot of exercises to draw people quickly. Spontaneously and with a lot of fun, we will develop our own personal signature.

All together we will spend some time on Sunday brunch that most probably will result in drawing food & kitchen scenes.

I love to discover the world around me, especially in a visual way! Currently I study architecture at university, but I also have background in fashion design. So urban sketching is a perfect way for me to feel, understand and remember new places, meet nice people and get bright experience, it is beautiful way to relax as well. I also use urban sketching as a tool to analyze the urban environment - perspective, scale and materiality are my favorite topics! I will be glad to share my experience and make new discoveries together!
